We all know the level of loyalty that dogs emote. If ever you have owned a dog or two, you will know just how close they tend to get. This story revolves around a pair of dogs who refuse to leave each other’s side. This Pitbull and this Chihuahua became so close that when the rescuers tried to separate them, something marvelous happened…
Back in October of 2014, two dogs were kept at the Rocket Dog Rescue, which is an animal shelter located in San Francisco, California. They were a female Pitbull terrier named Merrill and a male Chihuahua called Taco.Although they were sort of a mystery, the staff soon found out something special about them. Since these two dogs would refuse to be kept separate, the volunteers hoped and prayed for a rescuer who would adopt the two pooches together. This was going to be quite a difficult task. Although they had spent so much time together, in the near future, Merrill and Taco could face separation.
Two Peas in a Pod
So during the time when Rocket Dog Rescue received Merrill the Pitbull and Taco the Chihuahua, the workers were not informed of what their owners were like. There was something very clear about these two dogs though. It was the fact that they would cry and whine if ever they were kept apart even for a minute. The volunteers would often post pictures of these two on Facebook to show how fond they were of each other. “We just could not stand the thought of them being separated or waiting at the shelter for months to find a home TOGETHER so they are coming to Rocket Dog Rescue!!!” was the caption.
Staying Together
The volunteers would often post pictures of these two on Facebook to show how fond they were of each other. “We just could not stand the thought of them being separated or waiting at the shelter for months to find a home TOGETHER so they are coming to Rocket Dog Rescue!!!” was the caption. The doctors at Rocket Dog Rescue discovered about Merrill’s health problems after she was showing signs of illness. There was an infected urinary tract that had to be quickly medicated. They also found that this dog was just 3 years of age and that she must have been used for breeding purposes. Since she had a life-threatening infection, it was believed that Merrill was abandoned as that would mean she needs a costly surgery. Since she could not breed anymore, the owners obviously found her useless. The next thing that happened totally shocked the whole facility.
Merrill’s Surgery
As the pit bull was slowly dragged in for surgery, her tiny Chihuahua friend Taco could not sit still. He was now 8 years old. Merrill was kept away from Taco because of her surgery which made him completely restless and anxious. It was clear how much he wanted to be with her. When Merrill was finally released from the operation theater, both the dogs were wailing at each other. The doctors wanted her to stay alone for her to heal quicker, but the two of them absolutely refused to stay apart. Since they were resisting so much, the volunteers knew that something had to be done quickly.
A Surprise Visitor
When the workers saw that the two of them were not going to stay till until they were kept together, they finally had an idea. They allowed Taco to stay in the recovery room that Merrill was kept in. Everyone present there was totally blown away by how much they cared for each other. Taco did not for one second, leave Merrill’s side and showed his support any way he possibly could. After seeing this, the volunteers grew concerned that the pit bull and Chihuahua’s relationship might cause a problem later on. They feared that their bond might cause issues later on. Rocket Dog Rescue had seen many adoption processes and is well-versed with pets getting adopted. Merrill’s and Taco’s intense bond was considered a possible problem later on when they would find adopters. Since it was rare for people to adopt two dogs at once, they were worried.
Potential Adopter
Moreover, since Taco was an old age dog, they knew it would be difficult to get people to adopt him as well. The adorable pictures of the pair have been kept on the site but there was little interest for Taco. One day, something happened and it took everyone by surprise. Rocket Dog Rescue was now listing the two dogs as a pair. They even gave the caption, “These two love each other more than any bonded pair the shelter has ever seen. They cry when they leave each other’s side. This dynamic duo has lost their family, their home, and now we can’t let them lose each other!” to pull in interested adopters. The Rocket Dog Rescue Facebook post was circulating for a while now. Eventually, they found a family from San Jose who absolutely loved the dog pair. The family went to meet Merrill and Taco in Jodi’s place. They fell in love with them and now the dogs finally found a forever home.
