Jonathan left his half-empty glass of lemonade on the table and said, “I better get your groceries from the trunk.” With a friendly smile, he walked outside to retrieve her belongings. As he made his way to the car, he contemplated the encounter and chuckled at his initial response.

He realized that Carol’s emotional outburst might have been influenced by her age, and he reminded himself to be patient and understanding. Though he hadn’t intended to get personally involved in her problems, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of responsibility and care for the elderly woman.
