In 1940, it was discovered by a group of teenagers. The Grotte de Lascaux caves are situated in Southern France and are more than 17,500 years old. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 600 paintings on the walls and ceilings. The caves were visited by people even after World War II, however, with the increase of tourists, the place was soon closed from the fear of contamination by more than 1200 visitors per day.
